Year 5 Antony House Sensory Trip

‘For the Whistlers had begun to close in slowly, surely: converging on the school, on the playground, on the cage of shadows. On him…For some time now, cloud-masses had obscured the moon. He could see nothing; he felt the Whistlers’ presence. Their signals came more often and always closer. Closer. Very close.’

  • An extract from The Shadow Cage

To inspire our suspense story writing, Year 5 took an adventure to the Antony House grounds. We wanted to explore and research what our characters would experience in our writing so we trekked the grounds on a sensory walk. As we walked, we recorded our thoughts and ideas in a vocabulary bank to use back at school. We created observational drawings, in our sketchbooks, to pick out the fine detail of our environment. We also worked collaboratively to build our own shadow cages out of natural materials to experiment with trap-like shapes (a teacher or two may still be trapped up there!)

It was a n inspiring, spooky, creative day. The teachers cannot wait to read our stories now!
