Carbeile Junior School

Home Learning

Introduction

Home Learning is any learning the children do outside of the normal school day that contributes to their learning in response to guidance from school.

The aims of this page are to:

  • Inform parents of the school’s homework expectations.
  • Enable the pupil, parent and school to work in partnership.
  • Ensure progression towards independence and individual responsibility for learning.
  • Enable parents and children to work together to enjoy learning experiences.
  • Extend and support the learning experience via reinforcement and revision.
  • At Year 6, to prepare for the transition to secondary school.

The type of homework

Home learning activities will be set on Times Tables Rock Stars, and Spelling Shed.  The teacher will set tasks that meet the needs of the pupils involved and support the activities that might be occurring in class.  If your child completes 10 minutes of TTRS each week, they will earn  5 minutes Golden Time on a Friday.

Children will also be set a piece of home learning each half term that is linked to their topic.  This can be in any format and the outcome may be very open.

The expectation is that children will read at home at least 3 times per week.  This reading should be recorded in the child’s reading record and will be checked by the teacher each week.  If a child has read 3 times a week, they will be issued a reading ticket which will go into a draw to win a book each week and a tablet at the end of each term.  This will also earn the children 5 minutes Golden Time on a Friday.

A spelling list will also be sent home every week on a Monday and spellings will still be taught in class.  The spelling list for your child is available on Spelling Shed.  Completing the spellings will earn the children 5 minutes Golden Time on a Friday.

An outline of the content of each topic for every year group is also available on the school website.
